Stihl, Echo, and other debris blower manufacturers claim their blowers are much cleaner and quieter than... they used to be. So, we decided to measure the decibels emitted from a brand-new, 65db rated Stihl BR-500 commercial backpack blower. However, Quiet Orinda measured the sound up close, right where the operator is - which is how they test blower noise in Europe. In the USA, they move the test microphones 50 feet away - and that's how they get the decibels into the double-digits. So, while the sticker on the Stihl BR-500 says it's a 65 db blower, get next to one - or just take a look at our video, shot on 11/15/2010, to find out how loud they really are! One more thing: the BR-500 is one of 5 backpack blowers Stihl markets. It's also heavier, not nearly as powerful, and costs more money than all the others. So, without a decibel restriction ordinance, which blower is the "gardener" going to buy? Answer: The louder, lighter, faster.... cheaper Stihl! If Stihl and Echo really want to claim they're concerned about blower noise pollution, why aren't the other 80% of their blowers made like the BR-500?
